Neurologic Music Therapy
Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) is a powerful approach that utilises the therapeutic power of music to help individuals with neurological conditions enhance their cognitive, emotional, and physical well-being.
NMT is a specialised therapeutic approach that can be woven into Counselling and Play Therapy plans at Play & Creative Therapy Bundaberg.
Our Director, Kara James, brings more than 18 years’ experience as a music educator and performer prior to moving into the therapeutic space. She has postgraduate training in Neurologic Music Therapy and is an affiliate of the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy, recognised as a Neurologic Music Therapy Allied Professional (NMTAP).

What is Neurological Music Therapy?
Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) is an evidence-based approach that uses rhythm and music to engage and strengthen different areas of the brain. Drawing on standardised, research-informed techniques, music becomes a tool for supporting speech, communication, movement, attention, regulation, and overall wellbeing.
Our NMT Allied Professional has specialised training in how music interacts with the brain and nervous system. By weaving evidence-based techniques into personalised music experiences, we create sessions that are both therapeutic and deeply engaging. Each activity is tailored to the individual, supporting growth, confidence, and meaningful change in ways that feel compassionate and empowering.

Supporting Communication
Music can open new pathways for speech, language, and self-expression, especially when words feel hard to access.

Enhancing Movement & Coordination
Rhythm and melody provide structure for the brain and body, supporting physical skills like walking, balance, and fine motor control.

Strengthening Emotional Regulation
The natural rhythm of music helps regulate nervous system, offering tools for managing distress, big feelings, and sensory experiences.

Building Confidence & Connection
Engaging with music fosters joy, creativity, and connection -supporting self-esteem and relationships with others.
